Besides my research, I love rock climbing, caving, and spending time with my wife Michelle and baby Jay (born in 2020). My wife works at the non-profit Franklinton Farms. I also support the following non-profit organizations (and I hope you do too):
- Eden Reforestation Projects is one of the most efficient environmental organizations employing people living in poverty to plant 15 million trees per month at a cost of 10 cents per tree.
- Oxfam fights extreme poverty and its root causes.
- 350 advocates for the changes needed to combat the climate crisis.
- World Wildlife Fund works to reduce the most pressing threats to the diversity of life on Earth.
- Bat Conservation International conserves bat populations around the world. I also serve on the board of directors.
- Amnesty International fights for human rights.
- Heterodox Academy aims to increase open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement.
- Wikimedia Foundation creates free and open knowledge for everyone.
- PLOS is the public library of science.
- ASAPbio promotes transparency and innovation in life science communication.
- Peer Community In provides a new way of doing peer review.
